Facilities include a full service marina with gasoline, oil, groceries, and food service. Forest facilities include an 88 unit campground, a group campground, swim beach, picnic areas, two boat launches, a paved accessible trail, day use trails and portions of both the Centennial and Deerfield trails. Large brown trout are caught in Rapid Creek above and below the reservoir. The Bureau of Reclamation manages the dam and water. It is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest, boasting 14 miles of shoreline and 150 foot depths on 800 acres. The majority of our time in this spot was very calm and we felt the areas solitude. We didn’t notice any other campers in the area but every so often we would see quads and dirt bikes pass by. We settled in on the outskirts of the meadow and we were surrounded by green forested hillsides. As we were looking for a dispersed camp spot, we ventured onto Forest Road 672 and found a peaceful spot near a pretty meadow. ![]() We left the hustle and bustle of Rapid City to go explore the Black Hills. Our Experience Camping in the Black Hills Miles from Town: About 21 miles from Rapid City but there are several closer small towns in the area. Hidden in the northwestern part of the state, Slim Buttes is a mix of pine forest and Badlands formations that’s part of Custer National Forest, one of the smallest national forests in the country. Road Conditions: The segment of dirt road is less than a mile. Solar: Good but limited as there are trees and the spot is situated in a valley Follow this for about a quarter miles and the meadow will be on the right. Next, turn left onto Silver City Road for about 2.2 miles then turn right onto Broad Gulch Road/Forest Road 672 (dirt). Turn right onto the US-385N for 1.4 miles.
